Explanations about Ministerial Resolutions

The Citadel of Machu Picchu (Llacta Machu Picchu in quechua) is a heritage belonging to the Peruvian Government and humanity. So Peruvian Government manages the site, Access, restrictions and rules, rates and possible discounts applies. These fees and discounts are reflected on this website, that is why we only offer what the Peruvian Government offers.

In the past and until now, the Government, through resolutions, has applied different rates. Our agency has always reflected those changes on our pages and will continue to do it. We only offer the rates and discounts offered by the Government, nothing more nothing less. If there were new resolutions, we would reflect the changes immediately (usually in less than 24 hours).

Changes introduced by ministerial resolutions.

May 20, 2024 - Ministerial Resolution No. 000207-2024-MC

The Ministry of Culture approved the Protocol to manage the visits to the llaqta or Inca city of Machupicchu, which as of next month [June 2024] will be able to receive 5600 visitors per day.

The Ministerial Resolution of the Ministry of Culture (see the Resolution, in Spanish) establishes for 2024 the maximum capacity for visits to Machu Picchu. Thus, it determines a capacity of 5600 visitors per day from June 1 to October 15, 2024, and from December 30 to 31, 2024.

In addition, it is specified that the entrance hours for each circuit are as stated on the entrance ticket. And that there is a tolerance of thirty (30) minutes for the entrance to the Machupicchu llaqta during the low season and forty-five (45) minutes during the high season. After this tolerance period, the visitor cannot enter the Machupicchu llacta, except for force majeure reasons or duly proven fortuitous cases.

According to the regulation, the new tourist visit circuits come into effect on June 1, 2024. Visitors who have purchased entrance tickets prior to June 1, 2024 must adapt to the new circuits, according to a table published by the Ministry, which will depend on the capacity of each particular circuit at the time of the visit.

May 15, 2019

The Ministry of Culture Cusco has announced the implementation of a time restriction from June 1 of this year for the visit of certain places inside the citadel of Machu Picchu. These provisions are part of a pilot project to better control the visitors flow for better conservation of the site. The sites targeted by this measure are: the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condor and the Intiwatana.

Before these restrictions are definitively implemented, tests will be carried out to define the access times to the indicated sites.

From May 15 to 21, tourists will have to respect the following schedules to visit these sites:

  • Visit of the Temple of the Sun between 7 am and 10 am.
  • Visit of the Temple of the condor between 10 am and 1 pm.
  • Visit of the Intiwatana between 1 pm and 4 pm.

From May 22 to 28, the schedules will be reversed, as follows:

  • Visit of the Intiwatana between 7 am and 10 am.
  • Visit of the Temple of the condor between 10 am and 1 pm.
  • Visit of the Temple of the Sun between 1 pm and 4 pm.

These measures follow Unesco recommendations for the protection of the site aiming to not to include Machu Picchu on the list of heritage of humanity sites at risk.

January 1, 2019

Machu Picchu can no longer be visited either in the morning (Group 1 from 6am to 12pm) or in the afternoon (Group 2 from 12pm to 5.30pm). In order to relieve the site, the Government has decided to divide the days into 3 groups of 3 tours each. We will simplify by saying that from January 1, 2019 the visit to Machu Picchu will be according to 9 different entry schedules that must be chosen at the time of booking. These entry schedules are from 6am to 3pm per 1 hour period, which means that the visitor will have to choose in which schedule to entry to Machu Picchu, i.e. pass the entrance gate. For example, the 7am schedule to enter between 7am and 8am, or the 12am schedule to enter between 12pm and 1pm. The visit will be for 4 hours. We are aware of the complications and confusion that this will create, but like you, we are subject to ministerial decisions.

Again, to simplify, our agency has chosen to use its own name for each of the schedules and not those of the Ministry of Culture. We have therefore chosen to call each of these entry schedules: Machu H6 (6am entry schedule), Machu H7, Machu H8, ..., Machu H14 (2pm entry schedule). You can see the oficial announcement here.

Please visit our page about the differents types of tickets and our page to help you to choose your ticket. If you would like to discuss this with us or with other travellers, we invite you to use our forum.

When booking, it is no longer necessary to prove the child's age to benefit from the child rate. Until now, it was necessary to send a copy of the document when booking online. This simplifies the process because the discount is automatically applied for children up to 17 years of age included (the age at the time of the visit). Of course, you will have to show the document at the entrance to certify the age.

Machu Picchu can no longer be visited the whole day and has to be visited by half a day. It has to be selected when buying: in the morning (Group 1 from 6 am to 12 pm) or in the afternoon (Group 2 of 12 pm to 17:30 pm).

It is mandatory to have a guide to visit Machu Picchu. Approved guides not included in the ticket price are located at the entrance of the site. Their prices and conditions must be negotiated directly on site.

The visit of the site is done only in one direction, according to pre-established circuits coordinated beforehand with the guide.

The entrance ticket is only valid once. It is not possible to exit the site and return later.

The entrance and exit are located in 2 different places. It is then no longer possible to leave your belongings in the lockers at the entrance gate.

Umbrellas and children strollers are forbidden in the citadel.
